The changing face of fear Empty The changing face of fear

Post  Gracania Fri Jul 03, 2009 4:04 am

On November the 21st two men walked into two crowded bars, they sat for a while then left. At 20:17 a bomb exploded in one of the bars. A second bomb went off ten minutes later in the other bar. The bars were filled with young students, finishing school and those starting University. 21 were killed and 182 were injured. The culprits were never caught although six men were wrongly convicted and released later.
Where and when did this attack occur and who did it? Guess. Israel? Hamas? 2008?
Try Birmingham, UK 1974 by the Provisional IRA.

There is a changing face of fear of terrorism in the world. 9/11 was a devastating attack but it was one attack, the same goes for 7/7. We have all become much more conscious of terror in the world. We react to it more: identity cards, increased security checks, bizarre government powers and an increase in racism against those who happen to look like a small band of criminals. In Britain we have been hit so many times before especially in the 70s and 80s by the different bands of the IRA and they took out both civilian dense targets and important government figures (e.g. Lord Louis Mountbatten last viceroy of India and Uncle to Prince Philip the Queen's husband, Airey Nieve MP and war hero who was he first British man to escape from Colditz n WW2). Their death toll continues to rise and yet the endless precautions and fear of Jihad that has appeared never occurred with the IRA in Britain, the RAF (Rote Arme Faktion) in West Germany, the Basque terrorists in Spain and other countries.

Wha do other people think about our fear and is it playing into the hands of the terrorists?
